  • The professionals recognised come from sectors such as security engineering, medicine and social sciences.
  • Among the distinguished events were the European Society of Cardiology Congress, with more than 31,000 attendees, and the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine Congress, which received a special mention for its commitment to sustainability.
  • Madrid’s congress calendar for 2026 already includes major events such as the European Congress of Medical Oncology, which will be held for the fourth time in the capital in October, with an expected attendance of over 37,000 delegates.
  • Last night, Councillor for Tourism Almudena Maíllo attended the 18th edition of Recognition Night. The annual ceremony, which is organised by Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), Madrid City Council’s specialised department for meetings and events tourism, honours professionals who choose the capital as the venue for their congresses.

During the event, Maíllo emphasised that “these awards reflect the gratitude of the city of Madrid towards professionals who, through their work and commitment, make it possible for congress tourism to be one of the main pillars of Madrid’s economy.” The councillor highlighted that this sector “contributes decisively to generating employment, attracting talent and positioning Madrid as a city that welcomes knowledge and innovation,” representing “an economic impact exceeding €5.5 billion”.

The event recognised 17 new ambassadors, representing 13 congresses held in Madrid during 2025, from fields such as security engineering, medicine and social sciences. Among them, the European Society of Cardiology Congress (ESC Congress 2025) stood out as the largest congress hosted by the capital last year, bringing together over 31,000 participants between 29 August and 1 September.

Since its creation in 2008, Recognition Night has already honoured more than 300 ambassadors, whose voluntary work as advocates within their international associations is crucial in attracting major congresses to the city. This initiative is part of the Madrid Convention Bureau Ambassador Programme, a collaborative network connecting Madrid institutions, professional associations, and sectors such as higher education, science and research. The programme provides comprehensive support for organising congresses in Madrid, incorporating criteria such as sustainability and positive impact on the city.

Special mention for commitment to sustainability

This year, Recognition Night awarded a special mention to the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine Congress (SEMFYC 2025), held from 13 to 15 November, recognising the organisers’ excellent sustainability management. This award highlights the strategic focus of MCB’s action plan, which seeks to promote not only economic impact but also the social and environmental benefits of congresses.

This commitment to sustainability has helped position Madrid as the world’s leading meetings and events destination and the second most attractive city in Europe for event organisation, according to the 2026 Global Meetings and Events Forecast by Amex GBT. For the seventh consecutive year, it has also secured Madrid’s first-place ranking as the world’s best destination for meetings and congresses, according to the World Travel Awards.

Also recognised for sustainability was the 62nd National Congress of the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT 2025), which organised a training session for resident tutors from different Madrid hospitals alongside students from the city’s four medical schools, with the aim of reflecting on the practice of rheumatology and its future challenges. In this regard, MCB has a specialised area for sustainability and legacy that works with associations to develop initiatives with positive impact for both citizens and professional and social groups.

MCB also applies sustainability and inclusion criteria in the organisation of its own events. Recognition Night exemplifies this approach, integrating staff with disabilities through collaboration with Grupo Envera and partner company BestWay Events. This alliance has enabled MCB to obtain the “Dis-friendly” distinction, recognising organisations committed to the inclusion of people with disabilities.

    2026 Congress Calendar

Madrid approaches 2026 with an intensive congress calendar, combining events being held in the city for the first time with others that are reaffirming their commitment to the capital. Among the main congresses are the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation Annual Meeting (EBMT 2026) in March, with an expected 6,000 delegates, and the European Wind Energy Association Conference and Exhibition (WindEurope 2026) in April, with an estimated 12,000 attendees.

The capital will again host the European Congress of Medical Oncology (ESMO 2026) in October, marking its fourth edition in Madrid with an anticipated 37,000 delegates. These three congresses have been secured thanks to bids managed by MCB over recent years. In 2025 alone, Madrid City Council’s specialised meetings and events tourism department provided support for the organisation of 187 congresses, reinforcing its focus on this key segment of meetings and events tourism.

This year, Madrid will also host the European ALS Congress (ENCALS 2026), which will include outreach activities and awareness campaigns on the disease aimed at the general public, establishing itself as a representative event in generating a lasting legacy.

Full information on the capital’s main congresses is available on the Madrid Convention Bureau website. /

Madrid competed against cities like Singapore, Paris, Las Vegas, Sydney, Dubai and Seoul for this award

The capital has become the first city in the world to win the award seven times

In October, Madrid also triumphed in the European edition of the World Travel Awards, where it was named Europe’s top destination for meetings and conference tourism for the eighth consecutive year

Public-private collaboration is a key factor to Madrid’s success in this field, coordinated through Madrid Convention Bureau, the Department of Tourism’s division dedicated to meetings tourism

Over the past year, Madrid Convention Bureau has organised 70 promotional activities and collaborated with 187 conferences and 31 corporate events

In 2026, it will roll out a strategic plan to promote Madrid as a business tourism destination

6thDEC./ Madrid was recognised as the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination at the 32nd edition of the World Travel Awards. The Councillor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, accepted the award last 6th December at the global gala of these prestigious tourism industry accolades, held at the Exhibition World Bahrain convention centre.

The capital once again earned recognition from industry professionals, securing the award for the seventh year in a row and reinforcing its reputation as a premier destination for professional events worldwide. Madrid competed against more than fifteen highly competitive cities in this field, including Singapore, Paris, Las Vegas, Sydney, Dubai and Seoul.

With this win, Madrid has become the most awarded city in this category since it began in 2013, surpassing Las Vegas, which has claimed it six times. The city was also recently named Europe’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination for the eighth consecutive year in the regional edition of these awards.

As Maíllo highlighted, “It’s a moment of triumph for Madrid. Receiving this award for the seventh consecutive year is an unprecedented milestone that the entire city should be proud of. No other destination has ever received this accolade for so many years running, and the fact that it’s awarded by the industry itself makes it all the more meaningful”.

These awards, along with Madrid’s strong position in industry reports such as the 2026 Global Meetings and Events Forecast by Amex GBT—which ranks the city as Europe’s second most attractive destination for event organisers—highlight the quality and professionalism of Madrid’s meetings tourism, as well as its commitment to sustainability.

Public-private collaboration: The key to Madrid’s leadership
Public-private collaboration is one of the driving forces behind Madrid’s success in meetings tourism, which the city coordinates through Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), the Department of Tourism’s division dedicated to this sector. Meetings tourism plays a vital role in the city’s overall tourism strategy. It boosts Madrid’s appeal as a year-round destination, has a positive influence on key indicators such as visitor spending and average length of stay, stimulates the local economy and aims to have a beneficial social and environmental impact on the capital. MCB brings together 240 companies representing all sectors involved in meetings tourism, from hotels and event agencies to transport providers and special venues.

The Councillor for Tourism also emphasised the economic importance of business tourism, stating that it “generates over €5.5 billion if we combine direct and indirect impact”. In Maíllo’s view, “this is a key sector for Madrid’s economy, and this award motivates us to continue supporting a model that generates employment, activity and international visibility”.

Positive results in 2025 and the 2026 action plan
Madrid expects to close 2025 on a high note for meetings tourism, building on the strong figures from 2024, when the city hosted over 54,700 meetings with 2.58 million participants. This year, MCB has organised 70 promotional activities, including trade fairs and exhibitions, familiarisation trips, representation visits and a range of other events and presentations. It has also collaborated with 187 conferences and 31 corporate events.

Next year, MCB’s action plan will focus on promoting Madrid as a meetings tourism destination and on attracting new business (conferences, conventions and incentive trips), with a particular emphasis on key markets in Latin America, North America and Europe. This promotional campaign will involve activities in both source markets and the city itself. Meanwhile, efforts to secure new opportunities will focus on meetings and events from sectors that are strategically important to Madrid—such as cybersecurity, fintech, healthcare and big data—fostering synergies and driving the capital’s economic development. Sustainability will be the guiding principle behind every initiative. /

  • The World Travel Awards are widely regarded as the most important accolades in the travel industry
  • Almudena Maíllo, Madrid City Council’s Councillor for Tourism, accepted the award, which recognises Madrid’s excellence in the MICE sector
  • The capital’s success can be attributed to its excellent image around the world, the professionalism of the sector and the public-private partnership led by Madrid Convention Bureau
  • In March, the city won the equivalent European award for the seventh year in a row
  • Madrid has been named the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination 2024 at the prestigious World Travel Awards. It has now won this accolade six years in a row, confirming that the city’s tourism industry excels in hosting and organising professional meetings and international events. Almudena Maíllo, Madrid City Council’s Councillor for Tourism, accepted the award at a gala ceremony held last night in Madeira, Portugal.

Madrid claimed the award, surpassing other nominated destinations such as Singapore, Paris, Las Vegas, Sydney, Doha and Dubai. This sixth consecutive victory now brings Madrid level with Las Vegas for the most wins in the award’s history. Last March, Madrid also secured the equivalent European title for the seventh year running.

Maíllo emphasised that “this award is a recognition of the people of Madrid and of a city that inspires confidence throughout the world for its safety, mobility, cleanliness, and cultural and leisure offerings.” The Councillor added that “it is also a recognition of an industry that is doing its utmost to make Madrid a leading destination in the MICE sector.” She stressed that “this tourism sector is very positive for the people of Madrid, generating a direct and indirect economic impact of 2.327 and 5.238 billion euro in the city.”

Madrid’s success in the MICE sector

One of the main reasons behind this accolade is the excellent image Madrid enjoys all around the world. According to the Tourist Perception Survey carried out by the Madrid Destino Tourist Intelligence Centre in 2023, Madrid scored 8.6 for overall satisfaction, with 9.2 for heritage and cultural agenda, 8.8 for transport, 8.7 for safety and 8.4 for cleanliness.

The capital has established itself as a global leader, with this recognition underscoring its exceptional reputation. The city’s MICE sector has successfully developed a competitive, creative, innovative and committed industry that has so much to offer. This success is the result of the hard work, investment and professionalism of the sector in recent years, as well as the collaboration between public and private organisations.

Madrid City Council works closely with the tourism sector through Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB). While the department headed by the Councillor for Tourism oversees the strategy to position the capital as a destination for professional meetings, MCB brings together more than 225 companies from Madrid, representing all the businesses in the meetings tourism industry. It plays a key role in designing and developing the city’s promotional activities, and it celebrated its 40th anniversary this past April.

Looking ahead to 2025, MCB will prioritise attracting meetings and events in strategic industries that can create synergies for the city, such as cybersecurity, the fintech sector and big data. This will be underpinned by a commitment to sustainability and ensuring that meetings tourism has a positive impact on Madrid.

The Bureau’s annual action plan will place greater importance on initiatives with key inbound markets that bring business travellers to the capital, such as the United States, Europe and Latin America.

These twenty association meetings brought 72,000 professional visitors to the Spanish capital and created more than 42,000 direct and indirect jobs

The majority of expenditure was on areas like accommodation and restaurants, which accounted respectively for 44 million and 20.5 million euro

    • Among these heavily attended conferences hosted by Madrid last year, the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress and European Rotors were of particular note
    • Efforts to attract and support these conferences are carried out via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), the municipal body responsible for promoting Madrid as a destination for professional events
    • For 2024, Madrid has already confirmed twenty conferences with over 1,000 attendees

Last year, the city of Madrid hosted twenty major conferences with over 1,000 participants. According to economic analysis consultancy Oxford Economics, these twenty professional events alone had an economic impact of 88 million euro on the city, a figure which demonstrates the segment’s importance to Madrid’s tourism industry.

These conferences drew 72,000 attendees to the Spanish capital, enabling the creation of over 42,000 direct and indirect jobs. They included European Rotors, T3chFest, and the congresses held by the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), FTTH Council Europe, the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES), the Madrid Association of Pet Veterinarians (Vetmadrid), and the Spanish Society for Otorhinolaryngology (SEORL-PCF).

The bulk of expenditure was on accommodation in the Spanish capital, with 44 million euro spent in total. This was followed by restaurants (20.5 million), event-associated business services (8 million), transport (7.2 million), venue rental (3.5 million), shopping (2.5 million) and leisure (2.2 million).

Municipal efforts to attract and support conferences

The city council’s work to attract and provide support for these major conferences is of vital importance and is carried out via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), the municipal body tasked with promoting Madrid as a destination for professional meetings.

MCB is directly responsible for submitting bids for the capital to host these events and for providing support throughout the process, as well as offering a pioneering legacy programme which allows conferences to have a positive social and environmental impact on the city in addition to their economic impact. In 2023, it submitted 70 bids and provided support for 123 conferences.

More heavily attended conferences for 2024

In 2024, the city of Madrid will continue to host new major professional events which will further cement the Spanish capital’s leading position in the area of MICE tourism. So far this year, Madrid has confirmed it will host 20 major conferences with over 1,000 attendees.

They include, most notably, those held by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA), the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), the European Hematology Association (EHA), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA), the International Continence Society (ICS), and the International Botanical Congress (IBC). These seven conferences demonstrate the variety of the sectors which choose Madrid to host their events due to both its services and its first-rate MICE tourism offerings./

The Spanish capital wins the grand final of the 2023 World Travel Awards, the tourism industry’s most prestigious international accolades

    • The Spanish capital was competing against the cities that won the other regional categories of the World Travel Awards, including Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas, Paris, Seoul and Singapore.
    • Industry professionals reaffirmed their confidence in Madrid, which was named Europe’s leading destination in the same category of the regional edition in September.
    • The capital’s excellent reputation is the result of the city council’s efforts and its commitment to public-private partnership, implemented through Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB).
    • Madrid’s comprehensive offerings and the professionalism of its tourism sector are key factors in the destination’s leading position.

The city of Madrid was named the World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination at the grand final of the 2023 World Travel Awards, the tourism industry’s most prestigious international accolades, which were given out yesterday in Dubai. The win—the fifth in a row for the Spanish capital—represents a milestone for Madrid, cementing its position as a global benchmark for professional events.

Madrid was competing against 15 winning and nominated cities from the various regional categories of the awards, including destinations like Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas, Paris, Seoul and Singapore. Once again, the capital gained the trust of industry professionals, whose votes are tallied to select the winners of the different categories. The award provides fresh recognition for Madrid, which was named Europe’s leading meetings and conference destination for the sixth year running at the regional European edition of the World Travel Awards in September.

Madrid’s victory at the global edition shows that it continues to enjoy a leading position in the MICE segment. The Spanish capital’s favourable image and reputation are the product of a strong push by the city council in recent years to bolster Madrid’s image as a venue for conferences, fairs and meetings, with a strong commitment to public-private partnership. These endeavours are coordinated by Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), which also promotes the Spanish capital’s MICE offerings and provides advice and assistance to organisers throughout the event process. The bureau has been a pioneer in implementing sustainability and legacy measures in Madrid’s MICE tourism industry, helping it to achieve its current standard of excellence.

    Attractive offerings and professionalism

Madrid’s position as the world’s top MICE destination also hinges on two key factors which distinguish the city and facilitate the success of any event it hosts. The first is its unbeatable range of specialised offerings, which include major assets like its special venues, thriving hotel scene and superb transport links, along with its rich historical heritage, delicious food and endless range of cultural and leisure activities to complement any stay. The other factor is the exceptional professionalism of Madrid’s tourism industry, which guarantees top-quality services, talent and innovation, resulting in high levels of satisfaction among event organisers./

Madrid City Council is taking part, via Madrid Convention Bureau, in this international professional meeting held in Barcelona

    • The city council is promoting the Spanish capital’s range of specialised goods and services for the MICE segment in partnership with 24 companies from Madrid. Over 500 professional meetings will be held in total.
    • The Madrid stand has been built according to sustainability and environmental criteria with a policy of reducing, reusing and recycling the materials and processes employed.
    • The carbon footprint generated by Madrid’s participation in the fair was calculated and measures will be taken to offset it and contribute to environmental conservation.
    • Madrid Convention Bureau took advantage of its attendance of the fair to organise a networking event with 200 clients of the Hilton International hotel chain.

This week, the city council is raising awareness of Madrid’s exceptional range of MICE tourism offerings by taking part in IBTM World, which comes to a close today in Barcelona. Its presence—via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB)—at this important international MICE industry event is providing it with an opportunity to showcase the specialised goods and services that make the capital one of the segment’s preferred destinations.

To promote the city, it’s working in partnership with 24 companies from Madrid’s tourism sector, which are affiliated with MCB, including a range of hotels, corporate travel and events agencies and special venues. This great show of representation for Spain’s capital city was made possible by strong public-private partnership—an area in which the public body is leading the way—allowing both sides to present a more complete picture of Madrid, share their latest news, make new contacts and maximise business opportunities. Over 500 meetings will be held over the course of the fair.

    Commitment to sustainability

Madrid has its own space at the event: a stand which reflects the city council’s commitment to sustainability, designed and built according to environmental friendliness criteria with a policy of reducing, reusing and recycling both the materials and the processes employed. The same guidelines are used in the other promotional activities carried out by MCB as well as in its action plan, which prioritises sustainability and legacy as two of its strategic pillars.

For the first time at the fair, the carbon footprint generated by Madrid’s presence was calculated and actions will be taken to offset it in partnership with a range of companies and organisations from the forest, environment and natural heritage preservation sector. The aim is to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions produced in association with carrying out this promotional activity in order to contribute to environmental conservation.

    Networking event with Hilton International

IBTM World is a key event in Madrid’s promotional agenda. To bolster the impact of its attendance at the fair, MCB partnered with Hilton International to organise a networking event for over 200 of the hotel chain’s international clients who had travelled to attend the forum. It was held last Tuesday at the Hotel Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona and featured the participation of the Museo Chicote cocktail bar./

The direct economic impact of this European Society congress on the Spanish capital was over 60 million euros

    • The Tourism Department carried out a special welcome campaign for attendees at the airport and around IFEMA MADRID
    • This is the third time the ESMO congress has been held in the city, attesting to its organisers’ commitment to and trust in the destination
    • In late November, Madrid will host European Rotors, the biggest vertical flight trade show in Europe and the second biggest in the world, which is leaving its regular host city for the first time to be held in Madrid

Yesterday, the 2023 congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) came to a successful close in Madrid. This important international event for the medical oncology sector was attended by over 33,000 delegates and had a direct economic impact on the city of more than 60 million euros.

While this major professional event was being held, the Tourism Department provided its support by conducting a welcome campaign, via Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB), for all attendees. The special welcome included videos screened in Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, flag banners around IFEMA and event signage in two metro stations (Nuevos Ministerios and Feria de Madrid).

This is the third time the ESMO congress has been held in the city of Madrid, which hosted it for the first time in 2014 and for the second in 2017, with an excellent outcome on both occasions. Madrid was also chosen to host the 2020 edition but it had to be postponed due to restrictions imposed during the pandemic. At the time, its organisers decided to reaffirm their commitment to and trust in the Spanish capital, and, as a result, the event was held again in the city from 20 to 24 October 2023. Bringing together doctors, researchers and other medical oncology professionals, this is the largest and highest-profile congress hosted by Madrid this year.

ESMO occupied 8 of the 10 main halls of IFEMA MADRID as well as its North Convention Centre, South Convention Centre and various rooms in the nearby Palacio Municipal building, where some of the agenda’s meetings were held. In parallel, the organisers also made the congress available in virtual format, which was chosen by 10% of the participants.

    European Rotors 2023

Next month, the Spanish capital will host another important conference: European Rotors 2023. The largest vertical flight trade show in Europe and the second largest in the world will be shifting for the first time from its regular host country, Germany, and will be hosted by the city of Madrid from 27 to 30 November. Some 3,000 delegates are expected to attend the show, which will also be held at IFEMA MADRID./
